 Sorry I directed you on that wild goose chase.  I got to Berkeley at
 3pm and everything had been picked clean by then; hope you had better
 luck.  I ended up going to REI Coop (backpacking store at Gilman and 
 San Pablo, good prices) and getting some shoelaces.
 Another place you might check for seconds and extras is North Face's
 factory outlet in Berkeley.  It is on 5th Ave somewhere near where
 Ski Hut's warehouse is, and it has funny hours (only open MTW or WTFS
 or something like that).  All their stuff is 20% off or better.  I
 bought a tent there, used but not very used, and it seems to win.
 Also Sierra Designs in Palo Alto (Alma St.) has a seconds sale every
 other Saturday morning, 9-12.  You could call them to find out the 
 parity of the Saturdays.
